A wrought iron gate detail can be a great addition to a home, but it comes at a higher cost.

"High quality wrought iron gates are on the more expensive end of the spectrum, ranging from $1,500 to $7,000 (£1,135 to £5,296)," says Bailey. "These doors typically use a steel, wood, or glass base with wrought iron accents, rather than the entire door being made of that material."

A popular budget option in the UK, a uPVC front door is manufactured by embedding an insulated steel frame into the material to create a strong, sealed unit that is thermally efficient.

“Prices start at around £900 for a quality white UPVC front door,” says Elizabeth Assaf.

Door style also affects the final replacement cost. "You might expect a higher price point for a more ornate door with windows, custom millwork, wrought iron, or updated hardware," says Bailey.

“If you live in an area with an extreme climate, you should also consider installing a storm door instead of a simple front door. Storm doors cost more, but they also have a high ROI and are worth the investment if they keep the next storm from hitting your home!”

Keep in mind that while it is possible to replace one front door with another, it may also be necessary to replace the frame, and in any case, replacing both can be a better solution for security and energy efficiency.

If it's the latter, include it in your budget. "The frame typically ranges from $200 to $650 (151 to 492 pounds), but typically adds about $500 (378 pounds) to the cost of replacing your door," says Bailey.

“If the structure also requires structural changes to the wall, consider an additional $7 to $16 per square foot (57 to 130 pounds per square meter) in wall framing costs. As this is your front door, the frame will also need to work with siding, house cladding, insulation and electrical wiring, so you'll likely need to add around $75 (£57) for an electrician.
